everything you need to get you started…

If you’re serious about your 5K training, then take a look at this!

Have you started on your 5K training?

No, then follow this simple guide to help you get you started.

Yes, then have a quick glance through this guide to see if this can help.

My goal here is to help your to prepare for your eight week 5k training because I want you to be successful with your training goals.

So let’s start from the top!

Write out your 5k training Goals

You probably hear this all the time but it really does work.

Try this SMART method;

  • Specific – make your goals specific to your 5k training plan
  • Measurable – make your goals measurable using time or distance from your 5K training schedule
  • Achievable – only you can decide if it is achievable, if you really don’t think that you can’t do it, you probably won’t
  • Relevant – it needs to be relevant to what you want to achieve with your training
  • Time-specific – your goals should be set to a specific time frame

When to do your 5K Training

What is the best time of day for you to go running?

The reason this is so important is that you will need to find 45 – 60 minutes a day, four times a week for your 5K training.

My best piece of advice to anyone starting out on a 5k training schedule is to make sure it fits in with your daily lifestyle.

If you can train on your way to work, during your lunch break or before the kids go to school?

The better it suits your lifestyle the easier it is for it to become a habit.

Where to do your 5K Training

Do you have a preference for parks or trails or footpaths?

You may even have a couple of different runs that you like. You can alternate your runs on different days.

The great thing about running is that you can do it almost anywhere you like.

The choice is yours and finding a place where you enjoy running will help to keep you motivated.

How far to go on your 5K Training

Using the 5k training schedules you can see just how far you will need to run each day.

If you want to measure the distance for your running there are a few simple methods you can use.

  • Measure the distance in your car
  • GPS watch or you can also use your IPhone
  • Websites such as www.mapmyrun.com will let you measure
  • Google maps

It helps to know how far you need to run before you head back home.

Know the Walk / Run Method

This will really help you with your training during the first few weeks.

You can read more about this method by following this link.

Log your 5K Training Runs

It doesn’t need to be complicated.

A training log will help you to keep track of your 5k training. By recording all your training sessions each day you will see how well you are going.

If you need to take a break during your eight week 5K training program, then you simply go back to your training log to see left off.

If you need a simple training log, I have put together a template. Click here to download it.

Dressed to Run

Put your running gear out the night before and have it ready to go.

Have you got the right shoes?

It’s the little things that make all the difference.

Check up?

If you haven’t run for some time or this is your first go at it

It may pay to get a checkup with your local GP just to make sure you’re all set for your 5K Training.
