Can you tell me the distance of a 5k in miles?

This is a very common question so just in case you are wondering, the distance of a 5k run is 3.1 miles.

If you are walking or jogging enthusiast or looking to get started on a fitness program, it doesn’t really matter if you measure your distance in miles or kilometres, the distance is pretty much the same.

Running a 5k is a very popular goal for many beginner runners. It’s a perfect length for your first run and with a regular 5k training program nearly any beginner runner could train up to running this5k distance in as little as 6 to 8 weeks.

I have listed a few other more popular race distances, and although race organisers do occassionaly create a race of their own for different distances, most road races will typically fit into one of the following categories.

3k race = 1.86 miles.

Average time for a beginner runner to finish a 3k race is 25 – 35 minutes

5k race = 3.1 miles.

Average time for a beginner runner to finish a 5k race is 35 – 45 minutes

10k race = 6.2 miles

The average time it takes to complete a 10k race is 60 – 90 minutes.

Half marathon = 21k = 13.1 miles

The average time it takes to complete a half marathon is 2 hours – 2 .5 hours.

Marathon = 42k = 26.2 miles

The average time it takes to complete a marathon is anywhere from 3.5 hours – 5 hours.

To run a 5k in miles, how long will it take me to finish?

Generally most people will walk at a speed of approximately 3 miles per hour, based on this estimate you should be able to cross the finish line in approximately 60 minutes.

If you are a regular jogger and your average speed is approximately 5 miles per hour, you should be able to complete this distance in approximately 40 minutes.

Keep in mind these figures are approximate times only as there are many conditions that will determine the time it takes you to complete the 5k run on the day.

For example, even through the 5k run is typically run on a road, it will all depend on the terrain as it may be quite hilly which will definetely make the 5k run more challenging.

The weather conditions can also affect your performance on the day, if the temperature is high this could have an impact of your physical condition and how long it takes you to complete the 5k run.

The great thing about these events is that you choose the pace that suits your level of fitness, you can choose to run all the way, walk and run the full distance or even if you like you can walk the full distance.
